3 Signs You May Have PCOS

December 27, 2015

Women in the Lakewood area who are having trouble conceiving, take heart. The staff at OBGYN can help, and will check symptoms for a hormonal condition called PCOS that may be preventing you from getting pregnant.

What Is PCOS?

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, or PCOS, is a hormonal disorder that frequently occurs among women and disrupts ovulation. The three main symptoms that may signal PCOS include missed periods, unusual facial hair growth and weight gain. PCOS runs in families, so a complete medical history is helpful when diagnosing the disorder.

1. Menstrual Cycle Abnormalities

Most women have fairly regular cycles, however periods can become irregular for a variety of different reasons and may be a sign that something is wrong. Irregular vaginal bleeding with heavy flow are other indicatotions that may signal you have PCOS.

2. Hair Loss and Unusual Hair Growth

Hirsutism, or unusual hair growth, also can be a symptom of PCOS. In the case of PCOS, hair loss occurs on the head, while unusual hair growth occurs in other places on the body, such as:

  • Face
  • Chest
  • Back
  • Stomach
  • Toes or thumbs

3. Weight Gain

Insulin resistance can often accompany PCOS, causing weight gain and skin tags. If you have recently gained an unusual amount of weight, especially if the weight gain is combined with any of the other aforementioned symptoms, you should see your OB-GYN as these could be signs you have PCOS.
