5 Foods That Aid Fertility

July 9, 2015

1. Walnuts

Even though most women focus on ways to make themselves more fertile, we have to remember that it takes two to get the job done!

Recent studies have found that walnuts can boost fertility in men. In the study, men who ate 75 grams of Omega-3-rich walnuts – which comes to about 2/3 cup – showed improvement in their sperm vitality, motility, and morphology.

2. Beans

Studies have shown that women who eat proteins from beans experienced less trouble conceiving. Researchers found that infertility was higher among women who got their proteins from meats!

Now, this doesn’t mean that you should become a vegetarian anytime soon, but swapping meat proteins for plant-based proteins might just help you conceive after all.

3. Leafy Greens

There’s no doubt that fruits and veggies are good for our overall health, but did you know that leafy greens could improve your ovulation? Dark leafy greens are high in folate, a B-vitamin that has shown to help with ovulation in women and even make healthier sperm for men.

4. Olive Oil

Some of us consume olive oil on a daily basis – and how could you not? Olive oil can give a light yet rich taste to even the simplest of dishes. The best part is, olive oil is a monounsaturated fat, which has been shown to decrease inflammation in the body. Inflammation can interfere with ovulation, conception and even the early development of your baby. So don’t feel guilty for adding a couple extra drops to that salad or even for using it to cook!

5. Ice Cream

This one is probably our favorite. Studies found that one or two daily servings of whole milk – or whole milk ice cream! – helps women fight against infertility in the ovaries. And that’s not all. Milks and milk products low in fat can have the opposite effect, potentially changing the balance of sex hormones, which can hinder ovulation. However, be careful with portions. Doctors suggest replacing one low fat milk item per day for one with full fat, while also watching out for the extra caloric intake.
