Benefits of Taking a Probiotic

More than likely, you’re bombarded with health fads on a daily basis. With each one promising quick weight loss, perfect health, or other preposterous claims, it can be hard to weed out the real from the fake. While you may have heard the word probiotic thrown around here and here, don’t dismiss it just yet.

Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that are good for your body. And unlike the majority of the food fads out there today, probiotics tout many benefits. Here are just a few:

Decreased Allergies

While the research is still in the preliminary stages, studies have shown that there may be a link between probiotics and decreased allergies. In one study, women who took probiotics during their pregnancy saw a 30 percent reduction in childhood eczema, which is an early sign of allergies in young children.

Increased Immunity

Your digestive tract is full of hundreds of different types of bacteria, which work together to help you digest your food. Put simply, the more “good” bacteria in your stomach, the healthier your immune system will be.

But at least there is good news, because now there is new research from Harvard Medical School that shows a positive link between probiotics and your immune system. While the research is still in the preliminary stages, there is a promising link between taking a probiotic and upping your immunity.

Improved Vaginal Health

Probiotics tend to conjure images of healthy digestive systems, but the bacteria can be very beneficial for vaginal health too. Much like your digestive system, your vagina relies on a balance of good and bad bacteria. When the balance is thrown off, yeast infections or bacterial vaginosis can occur. Studies have shown however, that probiotics can help to promote the balance of good and bad bacteria, prevent infection, or manage an already active infection.
