Home Remedies to Relieve Lower Back Pain

February 11, 2016

Lower back pain is one of the most common health complaints in the U.S. While there are many possible causes of lower back pain in women, it’s often related to some type of muscle strain or added stress, as is common with pregnancy. Fortunately, there are some simple home remedies that may provide relief from lower back pain.

1. Cold/Heat Therapy

Some type of cold applicationin the form of a homemade ice pack or a cool gel packis most effective when applied within the first few days of experiencing lower back pain. After 48 hours, switch to heat therapy in the form of a heating pad or warming gel pack. This tends to be more beneficial for your back muscles.

2. Light Exercise

While some initial bed rest may be helpful for back pain, prolonged inactivity will only make the pain worse. Getting some light exercise, even if it’s just walking around the block for 20 to 30 minutes, can help strengthen back muscles and reduce lower back pain.

3. Stretching

If your lower back pain is related to staying in one position, take periodic breaks to get up and stretch and be mindful of your posture. Muscles can also be stretched with activities such as yoga, which can be performed at home once you learn the positions.

4. Dietary Adjustments

Adding a few healthy food choices to your diet may also help keep your lower back pain in check. Salmon, for instance, is loaded with omega-3 fatty acids that can reduce inflammation.
