How Much Weight Should I Gain While Pregnant?

May 21, 2015

To say your body will experience a few changes during pregnancy is an understatement. As your body prepares to bring a little one into this world, you’ll experience a laundry list of physical changes. While some of the changes are great (hello, thicker and shinier hair!), some of them aren’t as welcomed — like weight gain. Gaining weight, however, is natural and healthy when you’re pregnant. But just how much should you gain? Learn how to maintain a healthy weight during your pregnancy, here.

Healthy Weight Gain During Pregnancy

How much weight you should gain during pregnancy depends on a few factors, like your pre-pregnancy weight, your BMI and your height. Although everyone will differ, these are the guidelines on healthy weight gain during pregnancy, according to the Institute of Medicine:

– Women whose pre-pregnancy weight is in a healthy range (meaning their BMI falls between 18.5 and 24.9) should gain between 25 and 35 pounds.

– Women who are considered underweight (with a BMI falling below 18.5) should gain between 28 and 40 pounds.

– Women who are considered overweight (with a BMI of 25 to 29.9) should gain between 15 and 25 pounds.
It’s important to keep in mind that these are general guidelines. For example, women who are athletes may be leaner and have a lower BMI while still remaining healthy, so it is important to always consult with your OB-GYN.

How Much Do I Need to Eat During Pregnancy?

Pregnancy is a beautiful time in your life, but it can also be overwhelming. Besides all of the physical and emotional changes, you may be stressing over whether you’re gaining the right amount of weight or getting enough nutrients. The truth is, eating for two doesn’t actually require as many extra calories as expectant mothers tend to think. In fact, during the first trimester, your body won’t require any extra calories. In the second trimester, it is recommended to eat 350 calories per day, and in the third trimester, it is recommended to eat 450 extra calories per day.

Staying Healthy During Pregnancy

Staying healthy during pregnancy is important for both mother and child. Maintaining a healthy diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables and unprocessed foods is a great way to gain a healthy amount of weight while also getting the vitamins and nutrients you and your baby need.
