Pregnancy Myths: Can I Have Intercourse While Pregnant?

February 16, 2015

When you first become pregnant, suddenly everyone is an “expert” on babies. You’ll hear a lot of different rumors and myths about what you can and cannot do. But one of the most common things you’ll hear is that you can’t have sex while pregnant. Before abstaining from sex for the next nine months, learn the facts on intercourse while pregnant and find out if it’s right for you.

Is it Safe to Have Sex While Pregnant?

Generally the answer is yes. If your pregnancy has been proceeding normally, then you should be able to have sex up until your water breaks. A protective amniotic sac surrounds the fetus, so being intimate won’t hurt them.

When is it NOT Safe to Have Sex While Pregnant?

Certain conditions during pregnancy may mean you have to abstain from intercourse. Some of these conditions may include:

  • You have a history of miscarriages
  • You are at risk for preterm labor
  • You have abnormal bleeding or discharge
  • Your baby’s amniotic sac has ruptured
  • You have a dilated cervix
  • You or your partner has an outbreak of genital herpes
  • You have placenta previa
  • You are expecting multiples

If any of these apply to you, then you may have to limit or stop your sexual activity. It’s important to discuss with your OB-GYN or midwife if intercourse is safe for you during pregnancy.

Will Intercourse Feel the Same?

Sex may feel different when you’re pregnant. This is because pregnancy increases the blood flow to the pelvic area. Increased blood flow causes the genitals to engorge and may heighten the sensations felt during intercourse. For many women, this makes sex much more enjoyable.

However, there are those who find the added sensation too much, making intercourse uncomfortable. Also, some may experience abdominal cramps right after sex. That, plus tender breasts and nausea could make sex the last thing on a pregnant woman’s mind. This is why it’s important to listen to your body.
