Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)

April 6, 2023

Have you considered getting tested for sexually transmitted infections?  It would be a good idea especially if you think you may have been exposed, have any signs/symptoms, or if you have a new partner.  Do not hesitate in getting screened for STIs. STIs are serious illnesses that need treatment.

Types of STIs

Common types of sexually transmitted infections:

  • Chlamydia
  • Genital herpes
  • Genital warts
  • Gonorrhea
  • Hepatitis B
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV)
  • Pubic lice (crabs)
  • Syphilis
  • Trichomoniasis
  • Vaginitis

Testing For STIs

Your healthcare provider will ask if or what symptoms you are experiencing.  There are different tests for each type of STI.

Testing may include:

  • Urine test.
  • Cheek swab.
  • Blood test.
  • A fluid sample from skin sores.
  • A discharge or cell sample from your body (generally from the vagina, urethra, cervix, penis, anus, or throat).

Treatment

Not all STIs can be cured.  There are however treatment options depending on the STI.  Taking Antivirals and Antibiotics can help with STI symptoms.  It is recommended to consult with your healthcare provider about your treatment options.

STI Prevention

The best prevention method is to abstain from sex.  However, if you are sexually active you can minimize your risks.

Ways to minimize your risks:

  • Use a latex condom during sex (any kind of sex).  If you or your partner has a vagina, be sure to use a dental dam for oral sex.
  • Get checked for STIs regularly.
  • Ask your new partner to be tested too.
  • Educate yourself about STIs and learn the signs and symptoms of STIs. If you have symptoms consult with your healthcare provider immediately.

We understand not everyone is comfortable with conversations about STIs.  It is important to your health to get tested and find ways to protect yourself against STIs.  If you are nervous to talk to a new partner about it it may be beneficial to know that they more than likely will appreciate how proactive you are being about the topic.
