What is a Gentle C-section?

September 4, 2021

When you are developing a birth plan you may want to be fully aware of all of your options.  Maybe you have heard of a Gentle C-section or a Natural C-section.  Curious to learn more about a Gentle C-section birth?  We will share some information about a Gentle C-section with you here so you can make the best decision for you and your baby.

Gentle C-section is gaining in popularity.  But why?  How is it different from a traditional c-section?  Generally, if you have a traditional cesarean section it was decided because you and your physician feel that that is the safest delivery plan for you and your baby. Or you had a plan to have a vaginal birth and the doctor makes the call to do an emergency C-section during labor to avoid potential complications.  Also, with a traditional C-section, the baby is delivered quickly and is examined by pediatricians immediately after delivery.

A Gentle C-section is elective and takes place in a controlled environment.  It is still surgery and it does not mean that your doctor is being extra gentle during the surgery.  The approach to the delivery process changes slightly and involves some elements that are very important to the parents that are welcoming this new baby into the world.

To Give You An Idea Of The Process…

The surgery starts with the screen up, and all of the sterile routines are still observed. After the incision is made the drape is lowered and the head of the table raised to enable the mother to watch the birth. When the fetal head enters the abdominal incision, the operative field is cleaned of blood and the partner is invited to observe the birth. The process occurs at a slower pace compared to a traditional C-section.  The trunk of the baby will stay in utero.  This delay allows some pressure from the uterus and maternal soft tissues to expel liquid from the lungs of the baby.  Replicating what takes place during vaginal delivery.

Once the baby starts to cry the shoulders are eased out. The mother and father can both watch their baby being delivered.  They are able to learn the sex of their baby at the same time the delivery team does. Well-being is assessed.  The umbilical cord is clamped and the partner is given the opportunity to cut the umbilical cord.  Lastly, the baby is placed on the mother’s chest and the baby can be introduced to breastfeeding.  This also allows for that skin-to-skin contact that can enhance the mother and child bonding experience.

This procedure is also known as a family-centered approach.  Since in most cases both parents can truly witness the birth of their child.  You may have the opportunity to have music playing in the operating room and maybe some other aspects can be included to help ensure this moment is everything you envisioned it to be.

Is Gentle C-section The Best Option?

Ultimately, your physician will want to help provide a safe delivery for both you and your baby.  Write out a birth plan and discuss the options with your doctor.  Convey what is important to you to have for labor and delivery.
