Every year, the Center for Diseases (CDC) reports that there are nearly 450,000 babies born prematurely in the United States. That’s 1 in every 9 babies born before 37 weeks. There are a number of health risks involved with delivering a child this early in the pregnancy, including breathing problems, developmental delays and even death.
It’s important that mothers do everything they can to make sure their babies are carried to at least 39 weeks. While many of these circumstances are simply out of their hands, there are a few things that expecting parents can do to help their babies stay healthy and safe.
What Causes Premature Birth?
There are many different things that can cause your baby to come early. Many of these medical conditions are sometimes simply out of your hands. Medical conditions can put women at higher risks of premature birth. These include:
– Being pregnant with multiples
– Previous problems or complications with the uterus, cervix or placenta
– Low weight during pregnancy
– High blood pressure
– Multiple miscarriages
– Physical trauma
– A history of premature births
There are also certain lifestyle factors that may cause premature birth such as:
– Tobacco use
– Substance abuse
Risks Associated With Premature Birth
There are many different complications that can occur when your baby is born too early. While not all infants born prematurely experience side effects, it can cause long and short-term complications. There sooner your child is born, the more likely they will experience some type of health problem. These complications could include:
– Respiratory system issues
– Low blood pressure
– Patent ductus arteriosus (abnormal blood flow in the heart)
– Intraventricular hemorrhage (bleeding in the brain)
– Gastrointestinal problems
– Lowered and underdeveloped immune system
– Low blood sugar
– Cerebral Palsy
– Developmental delays
– Heating problems
– Vision problems
– Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
These are just some of the problems that premature babies may face. The fact is, there is usually no way of knowing exactly what problems they may face until after they are born.
Stay Healthy During Your Pregnancy
The best way to prevent premature birth is by making the right lifestyle changes and receiving prenatal care. The fact is, women who do not receive the proper medical care during their pregnancy are more likely to experience premature labor.
While there are some circumstances that we can’t control, you need to give your child the best chance. Make sure you see an Obstetrician even if you are just thinking about becoming pregnant. They can make sure you and your baby are healthy and help you throughout your entire pregnancy.
